Navigating the Sea to a Successful Match
A symposium hosted by the AMA International Medical Graduates Section (AMA-IMGS) featured a presentation on “Navigating the Sea to a Successful Match.” Special thanks to the AMA-IMGS for enabling ECHO to post this well-received material.
Two members of the AMA-IMGS Governing Council shared insightful data and helpful tips.
Subhash Chandra, MD, FAPA, Clinical Assistant Professor at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Forensic Psychiatrist at Brooklyn Supreme Court in New York, guided the audience of IMGs through detailed charts based on data from the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) with a special focus on how IMGs ranked in the 2017 Match. He pointed out the mean USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 scores for IMGs that matched and those that did not match. Top factors that program directors considered when ranking applicants included interactions with faculty and house staff during the interview visit, interpersonal skills, and feedback from current residents.
Sameer Avasarala, MBBS, Chief Resident in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan walked the audience through a typical residency interview day at his program. His presentation is full of tips to prepare candidates to put their best foot forward during the interview process. He covered what types of questions to ask and when to ask them, prepping for the interview by gathering background information on the interviewers, and how to handle post-interview communication.
